Join us at McKillop Library to explore the wonders of bird migration with a screening of the PBS Nature documentary, Flyways, followed by a presentation from Dr. Charles Clarkson, Director of Avian Research at the Audubon Society of Rhode Island. Observe the dramatic and extraordinary journey of migratory shorebirds and some of the critical environmental challenges birds face, including the impact of light pollution on nighttime migration patterns. Discover the valuable contributions citizen scientists make to current scientific research by learning to identify birds in our area, and by measuring light pollution on Aquidneck Island.

Two different citizen science kits will be available to borrow from McKillop Library:

  • Measuring Light in the Night includes high-quality light meter, infrared flashlight, planisphere, data sheet
  • Exploring Biodiversity includes binoculars, field notebook, and clip-on camera lenses, compatible with your cell phone.

This library-sponsored event and citizen science kits are offered to the Salve community thanks to a generous grant awarded from SciStarter. Kits are available for borrowing from McKillop Library just in time for fall migration – come, let your curiosity and sense of adventure take flight!
