About this Event

The Psychology Department at Salve Regina University is thrilled to welcome the distinguished evolutionary biologist David Sloan Wilson as a guest speaker this semester. David is a SUNY Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Biology and Anthropology at Binghamton University and president of ProSocial World, a nonprofit organization whose purpose is "to consciously evolve a world that works for all". ProSocial World is a worldwide hub for the study and application of Generalized Darwinism.
His talk, entitled "Cooperation Can Spread Faster than Covid: Using Generalized Darwinism to Evolve a Better World" will be on October 7th from 6-7:30p.m. in O'Hare 160.
Say the word "evolution" and most people hear the word "genes". Yet, Darwin's theory has a much greater range of application, including human cultural evolution and computerized evolutionary algorithms (AI). The more general study of evolution can identify the special conditions required for cooperation to outcompete disruptive selfishness in all the contexts of our lives. Since cultural evolution can be rapid in the Internet Age, it is indeed possible for cooperation to spread faster than the genetic evolution of a virus such as covid.
