DESCRIPTION:In an era of deep divisions\, is meaningful dialogue still poss
ible? Dr. Velez will share findings from two recent studies that offer rea
sons for hope. First\, his research shows that how we disagree matters mor
e than what we disagree about. Whereas respectful conversations rarely inc
rease polarization\, hostile ones prompt people to "double down." Second\,
his work reveals that when we address the core beliefs behind someone's p
osition\, we can actually change minds in lasting ways. Velez will discuss
what these studies teach us about having productive conversations across
political divides\, and why dialogue remains more important than ever. \n\
nYamil Ricardo Velez is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at Col
umbia University. His research focuses on how the quality of political inf
ormation influences political engagement and representation. His most rece
nt work explores the potential for generative artificial intelligence to e
nhance our understanding of political psychology. His research has been pu
blished in outlets such as the American Political Science Review\, America
n Journal of Political Science\, and Journal of Politics. He serves on the
editorial board of Political Psychology and the Journal of Experimental P
 olitical Science.
